New Beginnings @ 10 On Your Side

Living in Hampton Roads for a majority of my life, most of the information I acquired came as a result of watching WAVY-TV 10 with my mother. Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would ever be offered an opportunity of a lifetime to work with the incredible team at the very station I grew up watching. I was hired as an intern by the executive producer of The Hampton Roads Show, Stephanie Cooke. On my first day at the station I was handed a piece of paper called a “run-down,” for The Hampton Roads Show.

When I first saw the complicated outline, I thought, “I will never understand all of these letters and abbreviations.” Seven days since beginning my internship, I not only understand the abbreviations and cues displayed on those formerly complex sheets of paper, but I am able to fully enjoy my job because I can now complete multiple tasks simultaneously with the help of the more experienced staff at the station. This internship has been rewarding because of how each day varies tremendously from the day before, and no two days are exactly the same. I have ran into some of Hampton Roads most famous anchors like Don Roberts, and have received guidance from the incredibly influential and hard-working Stephanie Cooke. I have gotten a chance to sample foods from some of the cooks that come to the show as well as interact with audience members from all different organizations including, but not limited to, comedians like Robert Powell III, muscians like Troy Breslow, ministries, after school programs, animal shelters, and even Blackbeard’s motely band of pirates. I even had the experience of joining hosts Chris Reckling and Kerri Furey for some field production work and promo for a few upcoming events. I cannot wait to see where the rest of this internship goes because I am learning so much and am so appreciative of this opportunity.
